Description

Cape Sounio, being only 68 kilometers south of Athens is an ideal destination for daily excursions, combining a visit to the Temple of Poseidon with the ample view of the Aegean Sea. The view is spectacular and one can see up to seven islands on a clear day.

Lake Vouliagmeni is located in the heart of Athens. In an idyllic landscape with brackish waters and underground springs. It is globally known for its labyrinthine underwater cave that has not been explored yet over but already stretches along 3,123 meters, with 14 tunnels and one of them is the largest in the world with a length of 800 meters.

History

The temple of Poseidon (450-440 BC) was a sacred location for ancient Greeks and especially seafarers who offered gifts and made sacrifices in order to propitiate the God of Sea.

The lake was created when part of the roof of a large underground cave collapsed about 2000 years ago due to erosion and tectonic movements, which is why there are no reports from antiquity, even from the great historian Pausanias.

Mythology

The Aegean Sea was named after Athens King Aegeus who, according to the myth, fell to the sea jumping from the Temple of Poseidon after seeing the ship returning from Crete and in which his son Theseus was on board with black sails.
